The Kaberamaido School (Uganda) Project
Church members from Berkley Street Methodist Church in Eynesbury
are heading 5,000 miles away to build a school dormitory in Northern
Uganda. The girls secondary school serves many remote villages and
some of the girls have to travel on foot for two hours to reach the
school. A dormitory would enable them to remain at school during the
week and travel home at weekends.
Twelve members of the church aged from 16 to 60 will be
travelling to the village of Kaberamaido in July to help with the
building work. They will be helping locals with the construction of
the dormitory using hand-made bricks. £20,000 is needed to cover the
cost of the building work and they are looking for Huntingdonshire
residents to 'sponsor a brick' to help fund the work.
People can donate as little as £1 for each brick, and have a
guess at how many bricks will be used to complete the building. A
prize of two tickets to a London show with an overnight stay will be
awarded for the nearest guess.
Reverend Chris Giles and husband Derek will be leading the team.
"This is in an exciting project" says Chris. "With no running water
or electricity in the village, this is a huge challenge but also a
wonderful opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of many
families."
Many fund-raising events open to the public are being planned in
the coming months. These include -
- Saturday March 21st -An auction at Berkley St. Methodist
Church
- Saturday April 25th - Barn Dance at Tempsford Village Hall
- Saturday May 1st - Murder Mystery Evening at Bushmead School
- Friday May 15th - a musical concert by the Aragon Singers of
Buckden to be held at Berkley Street.
- Fri. Sat and Sun - 3rd, 4th, 5th July - A flower, arts and
crafts festival, with Saturday night concert by the Berkley
